Fall Beauty Staples We're Restocking Right Now

Every October, the same thing happens in our group chat. Someone runs out of the one product they swear by, someone else admits they've been rationing theirs since August, and by Friday half of us have placed the same order. These are our fall beauty staples: the things we buy again and again once the air turns crisp and our skin starts asking for more. Nothing here made the list because it's new and shiny. It's here because we keep reaching for it, and because we'd tell you to grab it if we ran into you at the counter. Consider this our restock list, organized by what we reach for first.

Skincare Essentials for When the Air Turns Crisp

Summer skin is a forgiving thing. It's humid, a little oily, and it'll put up with almost anything you throw at it. Then the temperature drops, the heat kicks on, and suddenly your face feels like it's been left out on a hanger. This is the point where we stop experimenting and go back to basics.

In the morning, we want a vitamin C serum with a short ingredient list. At night we trade it for something richer like a botanical treatment that sinks in while we sleep and leaves our skin looking well rejuvenated by the time we wake up.

Then comes the barrier. One good cream and one multitasking balm are the difference between skin that feels tight by 3pm and skin that gets on with it. Our top balm lives in every bag we own and we're not subtle about recommending it because it seriously handles chapped corners, windburn, and the red patches that show up the second you put on a wool scarf.

A quick note: introduce one new active at a time and give it a couple of weeks before you judge it. Fall is also when a lot of us go back to a gentle exfoliant or a retinol, and layering everything at once is the fastest route to a flaky, irritated face. Start with the basics & let your skin settle before anything...your future self will thank you.

None of this is complicated, which is exactly why it works.

Skin-Like Complexion Must-Haves

We start layering clothes in the Fall but your makeup needs a lighter routine, so we trade full coverage for lightness and let our actual skin stand out. Our formula right now is a serum foundation that sits closer to a tint than a layer + a tinted moisturizer with SPF for the days we want even less.

On the days we want a little more shape, we reach for a palette built around a celebrity makeup artist's viral underpainting technique. It's a fancy way of saying you apply contour, color corrector, and highlighter first, then foundation over the top. And yes it sounds backwards....until you try it. The result is a soft, lit-from-within structure that doesn't look like you tried, which is the entire point. And if you're short on time, our guide to the beauty products that make you look put together in under five minutes covers the speed-run version.

One practical tip: your skin actually changes color August- October, so a base that matched perfectly in July can look a shade too warm or too light by this time. Don't be shy about mixing two shades together to perfect your Fall match.

Cheeks & Lips, With Depth

Now is your time to play with depth, nothing dramatic, just richer. The easiest way to get there is to buy versatile products, like a cream blush that works on cheeks and lips. This means one product in your bag that does two jobs, and kudos if it blends with your fingers in the back of an uber.

A matte lipstick that actually feels comfortable is rarer than it should be, so when we find one that doesn't dry out by lunch, we buy backups. Then there's the liner, the unsung hero of fall lip. A warm, rosy brown is what makes every lipstick look intentional, and we liked ours enough to write a whole review. Add a sheer lipstick balm for the days you want just a flush and one statement lipstick for the nights you don't. Pair it with the nail polish colors every it-girl is wearing this fall and you're basically done.

Our take: apply your blush a little higher on the cheek than feels natural, since a deeper shade can look heavy if it sits too low. Also, line your lips first then press the lipstick on with a fingertip for a softer, blurred edge.
