Luckily, jackets are some of the best staples to have, which means once you find your favorites, you won't need to keep buying them every year, unless you feel a need to.
Some of our favorite jacket and coat staples for fall are trench coats, bomber jackets, capes and others such as utility jackets. There are so many jackets on the market; however, we believe these four types are the ultimate styles to have to maximize your wardrobe and to make the most of fall fashion.

Trench coats are the coat of fall. Not only are they super stylish, they are practical and typically lighter in weight, making them the perfect article to throw on on a day where the weather is cooler. These coats come in all colors, lengths and weights, making it a versatile piece that will get worn plenty throughout the season. Trench coats can be paired with just about anything from dresses, to miniskirts to trousers. They can even be paired with boots on a rainy day or with ballet flats on a sunny day. There truly is no limit.
Bomber jackets are a trend that seems to be slowly becoming a time capsule piece. These jackets have been trending for years now, beginning with a nylon, more sporty style and now being sold in a variety of styles from suede to leather. The Zara Suede Bomber Jacket has taken the internet by storm this year, earning itself the jacket of fall. This jacket grew so much in popularity that it has been "duped" by alternative shops such as TikTok Shop. If suede isn't your style, we have been loving quilted and wool bomber jackets, to stray from the trend while still wearing the style of jacket.
Capes and carpes are articles that were prominent fashion trends of the past but have been resurfacing on runways and in retail. There is no better article to throw on than a cape on a cool, fall day. If it is a little warmer, a cape is perfect because they do not have sleeves, making it simple to throw over your shoulders. Capes also elevate your outfit without taking away from what is underneath.
There is also such a thing as a cape with sleeves, so if you have an outfit, you feel a cape would complete it perfectly, but it's too cold, a cape with sleeves is a great compromise.
If trenches, bomber jackets and capes are not your thing, or you're sick of seeing them in every fall outfit-inspo picture, we have a few other jackets we think you might like. The barn jacket trend from Fall 2024 is still here; however, it has evolved to include utility jackets, too. These jackets are super easy to throw on with any outfit to keep you warm and add an extra layer of style. Though not technically a jacket, blazers are great to throw on with anything for an extra layer and to make a fashion statement. Lastly, fur was a huge trend last winter, 2024, with the Wild Fable Hooded, Faux Fur jacket sold at Target. This fall, we are toning down the amount of fur and adding linings to suede and faux leather jackets and coats. This elevates your outfit just enough without the fur being the main focus.
